How do you calculate resin for composite laminating?

The surface, reinforcement weight and number of plies determine the fibre mass. The fibre density converts that mass to volume. The fibre volume fraction for the selected process determines the theoretical epoxy volume.

How much resin for each process?

At an equal fibre mass, the reference fibre fractions are 35% for hand layup, 45% for vacuum bagging and 55% for infusion. A higher fibre fraction leaves less volume for epoxy. These are theoretical values without a loss allowance.

How thick will the laminate be?

Theoretical thickness follows from the reinforcement weight, number of plies, fibre density and fibre volume fraction. Actual thickness also depends on compaction and the reinforcement used.

Composite calculator FAQ

How much resin is needed for composite laminating?

Area, reinforcement weight, ply count, fibre density and processing method determine the theoretical epoxy requirement. Fibre mass and volume are calculated first, then resin volume follows from the reference fibre volume fraction. No allowance for losses is included.

How do hand layup, vacuum bagging and infusion differ?

This calculator assumes fibre volume fractions of 35% for hand layup, 45% for vacuum bagging and 55% for infusion. For an identical reinforcement, a higher fraction leaves less volume for epoxy and reduces theoretical thickness.

How is laminate thickness estimated?

Thickness depends on reinforcement weight, ply count, fibre density and the fibre fraction achieved by the process. Actual thickness may vary with compaction and the reinforcement.

How does fabric weight affect resin quantity?

A heavier fabric adds more fibre per square metre. Fibre volume and the theoretical epoxy needed both change; fibre type, ply count and process also matter.

Which epoxy system is suitable for laminating?

For hand layup or vacuum bagging this calculator suggests STRATPOXY PLUS for structural repair, GLASSPOXY for translucent laminating and STRATPOXY for marine repair. Infusion suggests INFUPOXY. Select a compatible hardener for the actual working conditions.
